This is Hospitality Operations Practitioner, a NIBS Role Pathway. It is for people who want to make a guest's stay go well.
It prepares you for practical hospitality work, in hotels, guest houses and lodges. You follow a guest's whole stay, from the booking to the farewell, across every department. And you practise it in one fictional hotel, NIBS City Hotel, with made-up guests.
It is for people entering hospitality. No previous experience is needed. For housekeeping, front office and guest service staff who want to progress. And for learners who want practical workplace evidence alongside their studies.
It helps you prepare for entry-level roles, like guest services, front office or reception, and reservations assistant. And housekeeping, food and beverage service, and lodge or guest house roles. Job titles vary, and NIBS does not guarantee employment.
Guest service, and housekeeping and rooms. The front office, and reservations. Food and beverage service, and communication across departments. Complaints and service recovery, and records, safety and hygiene.
NIBS teaches in three steps. Learn it, in short lessons and videos. Do it, with practical work for a supervisor. Prove it, in the Workplace Lab.
In the Workplace Lab, each task comes from a supervisor, with a brief, a rubric you can read first, and the files you need. You hand in your work, and a NIBS assessor reviews it: Competent, or resubmission required, with feedback. Handing in opens the next module, so you never wait for a mark.
There are eleven tasks, one for each competency, and a final portfolio that brings your evidence together. For example, you inspect rooms and report defects, serve a table with a severe allergy, resolve complaints, and work a full Saturday shift.
Finishing lessons shows progress. It is not competence. A competency is recorded only when an assessor decides it, on your Workplace Lab work. It then shows on your Skills Passport.
Three things earn your Professional Certificate. Every module is complete, including the final portfolio. All eleven competencies are recorded as Competent. And the free NIBS Professional Essentials course is complete. You can share it, and anyone with the link can verify it. It is a NIBS credential, not an accredited or occupational qualification.
Join NIBS Campus, which is free. Have NIBS Plus, which includes the pathway. Press Start this pathway on its page, and confirm. Module 0 opens, and your Workplace Lab board is set up.
Hospitality Operations Practitioner: every part of a guest's stay, learned, practised and proved.
What is this programme?
Hospitality Operations Practitioner is a NIBS professional career-readiness programme focused on practical hospitality workplace skills. You learn how a hospitality establishment runs, then you do the everyday work: welcoming and serving guests, preparing and inspecting rooms, checking guests in, taking bookings, serving a table, communicating across departments, recovering a complaint, keeping records accurate and working safely.
You practise in one fictional hotel, NIBS City Hotel, across a series of simulated shifts, and every competency is assessed by NIBS against a published standard. It is a NIBS award: it is not an accredited or occupational qualification, it is not chef training, a hotel-industry licence or a security qualification, and it is not approved by any hotel group or industry body.
Who is it for?
Suitable for people entering hospitality, current hospitality workers seeking progression, housekeepers and cleaners wanting broader operational skills, front-office or guest-service staff, and learners who want practical workplace evidence alongside existing studies. No previous hospitality experience is needed. You need to read and write English well and be comfortable using a computer, or be willing to learn at an e-Learning Cafe with facilitator support. No paid software is needed: Word and Excel, or free alternatives, are enough.

What will I actually do?
Workplace Lab tasks are the heart of the pathway. Each is real hotel work at NIBS City Hotel, done to a supervisor's brief and a published standard:
- Map a guest's stay through every department.
- Handle five guest-service moments and write a service checklist.
- Inspect three rooms, report the defects and log lost property.
- Check in three guests with care and hand the shift over.
- Take a group booking from enquiry to amendment.
- Serve a table with a severe allergy and a dietary request.
- Answer a guest's email and handle a messaging problem.
- Resolve three complaints, including an abusive guest.
- Put the hotel's records right and work out the week's occupancy.
- Turn a safety walk into a risk list and write an incident report.
- Work a full Saturday shift across the hotel.
- Put together your final portfolio and career plan.
How long does it take?
About 107 hours of study and practice over 12 weeks. Each module opens when you finish the one before it, not on a date, and your study plan paces you without cut-offs. Start any time.
How will I study?
Online through NIBS Campus, at a NIBS e-Learning Cafe with computers and a facilitator, or at Katlehong Computer School. Workplace Lab tasks are completed from any of them.
Where does the work happen?
You learn in NIBS Campus. The Workplace Lab is where you do the work: each task is given to you there, you submit your evidence there, and a NIBS assessor reviews it there. The decision is recorded by NIBS against your name.
The pathway moves through the three stages:
-
Learn
Orientation and preparation
Orientation, how a hospitality establishment works, and guest service.
In NIBS Campus
-
Do
Guided practice
Housekeeping, front office, reservations, food and beverage service, communication, complaints, digital records, safety and career readiness, with tasks in the Workplace Lab.
In the Workplace Lab
-
Operate
Less-guided workplace simulation
A whole simulated shift at NIBS City Hotel, and the final portfolio, reviewed as a whole.
In the Workplace Lab
What evidence will I produce?
Your evidence is the work you did, not a test about it. Over the pathway you build a portfolio that includes:
- A guest journey map and a guest-service checklist.
- A room turnaround checklist, an inspection report and a lost property record.
- Check-in records and shift handovers.
- A reservation record with confirmation and amendment emails.
- A restaurant order docket with an allergy instruction and a bill handover.
- A guest email reply, a service-recovery record and an incident report.
- Corrected guest records, a maintenance ticket and an occupancy summary.
- A safety risk list, your Saturday shift evidence and a 12-month career progression plan.
- Assessor feedback, and your response where a resubmission was asked for.
Every submission moves through the same states:
- Assigned
- In progress
- Submitted
- Under review
- Competent
- Resubmission required
- Closed
What credential do I receive?
Each competency you demonstrate is recorded by NIBS and can be verified online. When every requirement is met (all required learning, every required Workplace Lab task, all eleven competencies assessed as Competent, the final portfolio accepted, no unresolved required resubmission, and the free NIBS Professional Essentials course completed), NIBS issues the NIBS Professional Certificate: Hospitality Operations Practitioner. It is an institutional award issued by NIBS. It is not an accredited or occupational qualification, it is not registered by SAQA or the QCTO, it is not chef training, a hotel-industry licence or a security qualification, and it is not approved by any hotel group or industry body. 100% of the lessons alone never issues it.
